Fred is a Rwandan-Belgian artist with a voice that floats somewhere between warm tea and a smoky Sunday evening. He moves at the crossroads of hip-hop and soul, though anyone who has ever seen him live knows that “moves” is no euphemism. The man lives his music. Not with choreographies or light shows, but with raw energy, charisma that needs no media training, and lyrics that land like a sharp left hook when you’re not paying attention.
In 2023, the wider public took notice when he won both the jury and audience awards at Belgian contest Sound Track. Since then, he has shared stages with artists like Martha Da’ro, Hak Baker, and Antony Szmierek, artists who, each in their own way, also offer more than just a catchy hook.
Beyond his own performances, Fred Gata uses his platform to uplift others, especially young talent. Preferably unsure and unpolished. At events such as Grab The Mic at De Zomerfabriek, Bizanders at De Pianofabriek, or RAUW at Het Depot, you’ll see him cheering just as hard for a trembling sixteen-year-old as for a seasoned spoken word veteran. Fred creates spaces where you’re allowed to stumble. And where that’s completely okay.
Alongside music, Fred also works with visual art. Not because it’s “part of the package,” but because some stories simply refuse to fit into four minutes over a beat. As a photographer and painter, he zooms in on faces, bodies, and emotions. His images are raw, like his lyrics. Honestly, in a way you rarely see on Instagram. And then there is his social voice. No pamphlets or clenched fists at press conferences, but personal stories. In the Bizanders and Trill podcast, he spoke openly about addiction and how it shaped him into the person he is today. In the podcast Legende in de Living, he candidly addressed intergenerational trauma. During the Mental Health Expo at De Roma, he made mental vulnerability discussable, not through statistics or jargon, but simply by being himself, cracks and all.
Today, he is working on new material with several highly talented producers and musicians, including Joachim Saerens, Poldoore, Exfala, Alois Maddens, and Lars Overstijns. His own productions are certainly part of the mix as well. With his upcoming project, Fred Gata promises a fresh musical outfit ready to clothe the world, a versatile continuation in which soul, hip-hop, beats, a touch of chaos, and a great deal of love reveal in the finest details what style Fred belongs to: his own unique one. It will be a universe where there is room for tears, for dancing, and for a small revolution all at once.

“Fred Gata delivered what was perhaps the best set on the Garden Stage, which meant a huge crowd had gathered in front of the stage. Shirtless, he sang his way into everyone’s hearts with his soulful and, above all, powerful voice. (...) Backed by thumping bass lines, Fred Gata put on a show that was actually too big for the Garden Stage, and we expect to see him back on bigger stages before long.” – Dansende Beren
He has a voice that sounds as though it has already lived through five turbulent lives. Yet he was anything but subdued. With his American flair, he pulled out all the stops to get the audience fully fired up. In the foyer, Gata delivered an authentic performance of the sort that only a seasoned showman can deliver. The show was a powerful finale to a successful evening showcasing the very best of our fertile Belgian scene. – Indiestyle
Fred Gata proved at Gent Jazz on Sunday that it’s a match made in heaven. The Brussels-based artist kicked off his set with an a cappella moment, played tracks from his new EP and effortlessly had the audience on his side from start to finish. – BRUZZ
Somewhere between organic soul and understated hip-hop, "More" is built on a simple yet powerful foundation: acoustic and electric guitars, a breakbeat rhythm, a touch of exoticism… and above all that raw, weathered voice that tells it like it is, without beating about the bush. – RTBF
